Catalog note. Material: warm apricot Shoushan soapstone (shoushanshi) from Fujian, slightly translucent at the edges — a hallmark of finer grades used for personal seals. Technique: the lion knob is simplified into rhythmic mane scrolls rather than anatomical detail; the square base is left plain so color can be read in even light. The seal face retains a ghost of cinnabar from its last impression, evidence of use rather than a defect. Dating rationale: the compact proportions, soft modeling of the beast, and soapstone grade are consistent with Republic-period (early 20th-century) seal carving for literati and merchant clients; earlier Qing imperial seals favor harder stone and stricter archaic scripts. Cultural context: the seal is the literatus’s signature made solid — both tool of authentication and small sculpture for the desk.
