Catalog note. Material: Lingbi limestone from Anhui — dark, resonant when struck lightly, prized for wrinkled and perforated silhouettes that suggest distant peaks. White calcite veins thread the face like mist in a landscape painting. Technique / mount: the associated hongmu (rosewood-family) stand is carved to follow the stone’s foot, a marriage of mineral and wood typical of Qing studio display; the stand is integral to the work as exhibited. Dating rationale: Lingbi collecting spans Song to Qing; this example’s silhouette, vein pattern, and stand workmanship are consistent with Qing taste as transmitted through later collectors. Cultural context: the scholar’s rock (gongshi) is a mountain without climbing — “borrowed scenery” for the desk, judged by thinness, wrinkles, channels, and openness (shou, zhou, lou, tou in the classical vocabulary). Exhibition note: show against a quiet ground; sound is part of Lingbi lore but should not be demonstrated casually.
